Phillips' big game bests Thorold in 9-4 Port Colborne win

Behind a great game by Dayne Phillips, who had one goal and four assists, the Port Colborne Pirates defeated the Thorold Blackhawks, 9-4.

Phillips got on the board by slotting home a goal 2:32 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Port Colborne. Thomas Sestini provided the assist. Phillips dished an assist on Trevor Smith's goal that made the score 2-1 Port Colborne at 9:03 into the first period. He then added assists on Bryan Komasara's goal at 18:50 into the first, on Dima Lavrenov's goal at 6:48 into the second, and on Lavrenov's goal at 12:54 into the third.

Port Colborne pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 18 penalty minutes.

The Pirates made Thorold's goaltenders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, racking up 31 shots and forcing 22 saves. Blake Richard made seven stops and Vinny Merante made 15. Port Colborne stifled the Blackhawks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Pirates surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Port Colborne averages 5.4 goals per game.

Port Colborne also got points from Jordan Warren, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Lavrenov, who also had two goals and one assist. Port Colborne also got a goal from James Mense-Dietrich as well. More assists for Port Colborne came via Charlie Izaguirre, who had four and Michael Sharp, Pat Murphy, and Sebastian Kanally, who each chipped in one.

Thorold's offense rang up 32 shots on the Pirates' net. The Blackhawks could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 34 minutes in penalties during the game.

Thorold was led by Ben Hughes, who registered one goal and one assist. Hughes scored 6:44 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Thorold. Mark Arnone assisted on the tally. Thorold additionally got points from Arnone, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Denis Creighton also scored for Thorold. In addition, Thorold received assists from Brian Brosnan, Matthew Hoszko, Ed Creighton, Roger Sherwood, and Joe DiBiasi, who contributed one a piece.

Port Colborne's Real Cormier stopped 28 shots out of the 32 that he faced. The Pirates registered two goals on 10 power play opportunities. The Blackhawks registered zero goals on six power play opportunities. For Thorold, Creighton was ejected from the game.
