Elmira beats Cambridge 3-2 after comeback scare

The Elmira Sugar Kings survived a determined comeback attempt by the Cambridge Winter Hawks on the way to a 3-2 win.

Elmira made the score 3-1 on a goal by Pat McKelvie(APJ) at 17:34 in the second period, and Cambridge got as close as 3-2 when Cameron Pentsa scored 13:23 into the third period.

The Winter Hawks' power play was ineffective against the Sugar Kings' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Elmira's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Cambridge power plays. Cambridge was unable to stop the Sugar Kings from sending pucks towards the net, and Elmira eventually piled up 48 shots on goal. The Sugar Kings' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Elmira finished with 30 penalty minutes.

Elmira additionally got points from Brady Campbell, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Jake Weidner, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Elmira were Craig Johnson, who had two and Zac Coulter and Cash Seraphim, who contributed one a piece.

The Winter Hawks' offense rang up 37 shots on the Sugar Kings' net.

Cambridge was helped by Trevor Hache, who finished with one goal. Hache scored 4:01 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Maxime Lamontagne provided the assist.

Hayden Neuman made 35 saves for Elmira on 37 shots. The Sugar Kings registered two goals on six power play opportunities. Elmira ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Cass Frey was ejected from the game. Lucas Machalski rejected 45 shots on goal for the Winter Hawks. Cambridge incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors.
