St. Marys uses shootout to best Strathroy, 5-4 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the St. Marys Lincolns defeated the Strathroy Rockets in a shootout 5-4 (2-1 SO).

The shootout featured 10 attempts between both teams. Strathroy got a shootout goal from Wes Baker. St. Marys also got a shootout goal from Mike Mandarelli.

Calvin Penney had two goals to lead the Lincolns to victory. Penney scored at 3:20 into the second period to make the score 2-2 and again while on the power play 5:42 into the second to make the score 3-2 St. Marys.

St. Marys racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 16 minors and two majors for 92 minutes in penalty time. The Lincolns had been averaging 37.0 minutes in penalties per game. St. Marys kept the Rockets' goalie busy throughout the game, and Gordie Weiss made 34 saves on 39 shots. The Lincolns capitalized on Strathroy's penalties, netting two goals while skating with a man advantage.

David Sproat also scored for St. Marys. Other players who recorded assists for St. Marys were Tyler Bryson, Tyson Baker, Sean Consitt, and Mandarelli, who contributed one a piece and Kurtis Lavis and Kyle Flemington, who each chipped in two.

The the Rockets penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 26.0 minutes per game Strathroy had been spending in the box. The Rockets forced St. Marys goalie Devin Golets to work between the pipes, taking 44 shots.

Strathroy was helped by Tyler Coleman, who had one goal. Coleman scored 18:55 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Strathroy. Stuart King provided the assist. Strathroy also got points from Ryan Field, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Strathroy also got a goal from Nick Boyer as well. More assists for Strathroy came via Matthew Watson, Max Naus, and Matt Carroll, who contributed one a piece.

Golets rejected 40 shots on goal for the Lincolns. Team's Braydon Blight, Danny Bryan, Dean Pawlaczky, and Mike Siddall were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. The Rockets registered three goals on 21 power play opportunities. For Strathroy, Luke Jackson and Brett Dyck were ejected from the contest.
