Welland wins tough contest against Fort Erie, 4-3

The Welland Jr. Canadians gutted out a close 4-3 win against the Fort Erie Meteors.

Welland gained the winning advantage on a goal by Matthew Mateljan 13:08 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

Braden Curry had one goal and two assists to lead the Jr. Canadians. Curry scored on the power play 9:11 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Welland. Welland earned a power play opportunity when Jordan Bailey was put in the box for high sticking. Kyle Phibbs assisted on the tally.

Fort Erie's power play was ineffective against the Jr. Canadians' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Welland forced the Meteors goalie Wyatt Pickrell to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots.

Jason Lacroix also scored for Welland. Other players who recorded assists for Welland were Ryan Migliaccio, who had one and Chris Brown, who had three.

Fort Erie kept the Jr. Canadians' goalie busy throughout the game, and Chris McDougall made 40 saves on 43 shots. The Meteors could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 28 minutes in penalties during the game.

Fort Erie was helped by Nik Passero, who tallied two goals. Passero scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 12:08 into the first period to make the score 1-1. The Meteors had gained a power play chance when Aaron Beally was whistled for hooking. Alex Untersberger provided the assist. Passero's next tally on the power play made the score 2-2 with 1:23 left in the second period. Dallas Ingram assisted on the tally. Fort Erie additionally got points from Ingram, who also grabbed one goal and two assists.

Welland incurred 26 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Fort Erie's Pickrell stopped 29 shots out of the 33 that he faced.
