Toledo beats Michigan 6-3 as Zalecki gets hat trick

The Michigan Mountain Cats could not stop the Toledo Cherokee's Tyler Zalecki, who tallied a hat trick in a 6-3 win.

Zalecki's first goal came 4:09 into the first period. He then added goals at 1:41 into the second and at 16:12 into the second.

Toledo forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up five minors and two majors for 40 minutes in penalty time. The Cherokee had been averaging 22.0 minutes in penalties per game. Toledo made Mountain Cats' goaltenders to work without much rest, totaling 37 shots and forcing 31 saves. Dominic Juncaj made 14 stops and Ian Dvorak made 17. The Cherokee outdid their season average for goals scored. Toledo averages 3.4 goals per game.

Toledo additionally got points from Jordan Fogarty, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Toledo also got a goal from Jordan Prewitt as well. Other players who recorded assists for Toledo were Andrew Benyo, Devon Eckman, Brody Duncan, and Kyler Omey, who each chipped in one and Jake Manders, Brandin Thelen, and Brandon Layman, who contributed two a piece.

Michigan was helped by Ethan Baker, who grabbed one goal. Baker scored 11:34 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Toledo. Kent Wargo picked up the assist. John Arms also scored for Michigan. More assists for Michigan came via Jeremy Cugliari and Kenny Simmons, who each chipped in one.

Nate Gay rejected 15 shots on goal for the Cherokee. Toledo registered two goals on four power play opportunities. Team's Manders and Eckman were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. The Mountain Cats totaled 35 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play. Michigan ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Adam Morrison was ejected from the game.
