Granite City wins tough contest against Alexandria, 4-2

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Granite City Lumberjacks escaped with a 4-2 victory over the Alexandria Blizzard.

Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Eric Miller secured the win for Granite City with a goal in the second period.

The Lumberjacks' penalty kill excelled, as Granite City gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

The Lumberjacks were sparked by Miller, who tallied one goal. Miller scored on the power play 18:01 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Granite City. Granite City had gained a power play chance when Kyle Kuntz was whistled for checking from behind. Drew Otto picked up the assist.

The Lumberjacks stifled Alexandria's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Granite City also got a goal from Matt Raiola as well. Other players who recorded assists for Granite City were Zac Sikich, who had two and Aidan Verbeke, Mitchell Gwost, Brett Love, Hunter Schneider, and Aaron Storch, who contributed one a piece.

The Blizzard were often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. Alexandria surpassed its season average of 28.0 penalty minutes per game. The Blizzard were held below their usual level of production. Alexandria puts an average of 4.1 pucks into the net per game.

The Blizzard were helped by Drake Hunter, who racked up one goal. Hunter scored 19:14 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Alexandria. Danny Pelzer also scored for Alexandria. More assists for Alexandria came via Nate Mettenburg, who had one.

Scott Murray made 19 saves for Granite City on 21 shots. The Lumberjacks totaled 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major and went 3-for-8 on the power play. Dom DeGuisseppi rejected 24 shots on goal for Alexandria.
