Peoria vanquishes Queen City in shootout, 3-2 (1-0 SO)Owens Rec Ctr Sun, Feb 24, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
Cory Kettler netted the deciding goal for the Peoria Mustangs in the shootout as Mustangs prevailed over the Queen City Steam, 3-2 (1-0 SO). The shootout lasted for nine attempts between the teams.Peoria pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 36 penalty minutes. The Mustangs stifled Queen City's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Peoria's offense rang up 51 shots on the Steam's net. The Mustangs were helped by Clayton Layne, who grabbed one goal. Layne scored 2:58 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Peoria. Chance Homerin picked up the assist. Peoria also got a goal from Alexander Turin as well. Other players who recorded assists for Peoria were Max Finley, Kevin Gregory Jr, and Lyndon Fields, who contributed one a piece. Queen City put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Peoria to score on any of its four power plays. The Steam kept the Mustangs' goalie busy throughout the game, and Michael Parda made 37 saves on 39 shots. Queen City was helped by Emil Sundstrom, who had one goal. Sundstrom scored 6:28 into the third period to make the score 2-2. Eric Woodward provided the assist. Queen City additionally got points from Woodward, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Queen City received assists from Paul McAvoy, Trevor Voelker, and Devin Fracassi, who each chipped in one. The Steam's Alec Rounds stopped 48 shots out of the 50 that he faced. Queen City incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
