North Iowa uses shootout to best Granite City, 4-3 (3-1 SO)

Kyle Krueger scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the North Iowa Bulls picked up the extra point in a 4-3 (3-1 SO) win over the Granite City Lumberjacks.

The two teams needed eight turns to complete the shootout. Granite City's shootout goal was scored by Aaron Storch. In addition to the clincher, North Iowa got shootout goals from Richie Marenis and Krueger.

The Bulls came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. North Iowa was down 3-2 after a goal by the Lumberjacks' Aidan Verbeke at 8:00 in the third period. The Bulls knotted things up at 3-3 on a power play goal by Marenis at 11:51 in the third period.

North Iowa did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Bulls put an average of 6.2 pucks into the net per game. North Iowa forced Granite City goalie Scott Murray to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots.

Connor Langfield also scored for North Iowa. More assists for North Iowa came via Matt Kroska, who had two and Matthew Kaitchuck, Ron Lindgren, Eric Behrend, and Taylor Brown, who each chipped in one.

The Lumberjacks were led by Storch, who had two goals. Storch scored the first of his two goals at 10:39 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Tim Brown provided the assist. Storch's next tally made the score 2-2 with 13:58 left in the third period. Granite City had gotten the advantage when the Bulls' Behrend was sent off for tripping. Zac Sikich assisted on the tally. Other players who recorded assists for Granite City were Eric Miller and Blayne Ellson, who contributed one a piece.

Matthew Bartels made 20 saves for North Iowa on 23 shots. The Bulls incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Murray recorded 31 saves for the Lumberjacks. Granite City incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
