Granite City beats Alexandria 3-1 after comeback scareRunestone Community Center Sat, Feb 09, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Granite City Lumberjacks survived a determined comeback attempt by the Alexandria Blizzard on the way to a 3-1 win. Granite City made the score 3-0 on a goal by Blayne Ellson at 17:50 in the first period, and Alexandria got as close as 3-1 when Nate Mettenburg scored 17:09 into the third period. The Lumberjacks were led by goalie Scott Murray, who finished with 50 saves while allowing one goal. Murray managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.36 prior to the game. Granite City stifled the Blizzard's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Lumberjacks kept Alexandria's goalie busy throughout the game, and Kyle Miller made 38 saves on 41 shots. Granite City was helped by Aidan Verbeke, who racked up one goal. Verbeke scored on the power play 12:33 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Granite City. The Lumberjacks had gained a power play chance when Tanner Duffney was whistled for tripping. Mitchell Gwost provided the assist. Alex Koopmeiners also scored for Granite City. More assists for Granite City came via Eric Miller, Drew Otto, and Mitch Humphries, who contributed one a piece. The Blizzard forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up five minors and two majors for 80 minutes in penalty time. Alexandria surpassed its season average of 28.0 penalty minutes per game. The Blizzard did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Alexandria averages 4.1 goals per game. The Blizzard forced Granite City goalie Murray to work between the pipes, taking 51 shots. In addition, Alexandria received assists from Ian Eckland and Karson Kuntz, who each chipped in one. The Lumberjacks totaled 33 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 2-for-6 on the power play. Alexandria registered zero goals on four power play opportunities. For the Blizzard, Danny Pelzer, Spencer Peratalo, and Ryen Zerfas were ejected from the contest.
