Alexandria holds on for 4-3 win against North IowaRunestone Community Center Fri, Jan 04, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The North Iowa Bulls tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Alexandria Blizzard would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-3. Alexandria took a 4-2 lead during the third period, only to have North Iowa storm back on a Timothy Santopoalo goal 18:29 into the third period to pull to one goal down. Ian Eckland was all over the ice for the Blizzard, as he finished with two goals in the win. Eckland's tallies came at 4:08 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Alexandria and 5:15 into the second to make the score 2-1 Alexandria. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 8:38 into the second period. Ten fighting penalties were dished out along with five game misconducts. Alexandria forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and three majors for 59 minutes in penalty time. The Blizzard surpassed its season average of 28.0 penalty minutes per game. Alexandria's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five North Iowa power plays. Alexandria additionally got points from Ricky Seidel, who also had one goal and one assist. Karson Kuntz also scored for Alexandria. Other players who recorded assists for Alexandria were Garrett Skinner, who had three and Danny Pelzer, Kyle Kuntz, and Hunter Bowlin, who each chipped in one. The the Bulls penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and three majors for 47 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game North Iowa had been spending in the box. The Bulls did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. North Iowa averages 5.7 goals per game. The Bulls kept the Blizzard's goalie busy throughout the game, and Chase Wilson made 33 saves on 36 shots. North Iowa also got points from James Hughes, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. North Iowa also got a goal from Tony Paulson as well. More assists for North Iowa came via Eric Behrend, who had two and Chancie Hanson and Taylor Brown, who contributed one a piece. Alexandria registered one goal on three power play opportunities. For the Blizzard, Levi Erickson and Ryen Zerfas were ejected from the contest. Aaron Davis made 20 saves for North Iowa on 24 shots. Team's Patrick Sivets and Brandon Anderson were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
