Quad City uses early goal to top Queen City, 3-1

The Quad City Jr. Flames beat the Queen City Steam, 3-1, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Easton Halbert provided Quad City with the game-winning tally when he scored 14:40 into the the first period. A cross checking call on Ross Mullen put the Jr. Flames on the penalty kill. Anthony Caroselli picked up the assist.

Quad City was led by goalie Robby Vukelich, who finished with 25 saves while allowing one goal. Vukelich managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.52 prior to the game.

Queen City's power play was ineffective against the Jr. Flames' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Quad City racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and two majors for 24 minutes in penalty time. The Jr. Flames surpassed its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game. Quad City put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Steam to score on any of their seven power plays. The Jr. Flames' offense rang up 39 shots on Queen City's net.

Quad City was helped by Jason Hoehn, who had one goal. Hoehn scored 19:43 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Quad City. Clayton Janecke provided the assist. Quad City additionally got points from Caroselli, who also registered one goal and one assist and Halbert, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Quad City were DJ Mussey, who had one.

The Steam's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven Quad City power plays.

Queen City was led by Trevor Voelker, who scored the team's only goal. Voelker scored 12:25 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Quad City. Lucas McCammant assisted on the tally.

Matt McLaughlin made 36 saves for the Steam on 39 shots. Queen City ended with 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors and two majors.
