Three Rivers beats Toledo 5-4 after comeback scare

The Toledo Cherokee tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Three Rivers Vengeance held on for a 5-4 victory.

Three Rivers made the score 5-3 on a goal by Tom Diffendal at 13:13 in the third period, and Toledo got as close as 5-4 when Connor Crowe scored 14:19 into the third period.

Nico Vecchio had two goals and three assists to lead the Vengeance. Vecchio scored the first of his two goals at 15:59 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Three Rivers. Alex Berardinelli provided the assist. Vecchio's next tally made the score 3-2 Three Rivers with 10:42 left in the second period. Berardinelli assisted on the tally.

Three Rivers' penalty kill unit could not stop the Cherokee's power play, which converted on two of three opportunities.

Three Rivers also got points from Jonah Hoover, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Alex Shimoloens also scored for Three Rivers. Other players who recorded assists for Three Rivers were Vincent Susi, Thomas Leistner, and Robbie Sigurdsson, who contributed one a piece.

Toledo was helped by Ben Torchia, who had one goal. Torchia scored on the power play 4:40 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Three Rivers. A slashing penalty on Michael Straub had put the Cherokee on the power play. Kyler Omey provided the assist. Toledo additionally got points from Crowe, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Toledo also got a goal from Jordan Prewitt as well. In addition, Toledo received assists from Tyler Zalecki, Brandon Layman, and Nate Gay, who each chipped in one.

Nate Mortland recorded 20 saves for the Vengeance. Three Rivers incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Nate Gay made 22 saves for Toledo on 27 shots. The Cherokee incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
