Granite City uses shootout to best North Iowa, 4-3 (2-0 SO)

DJ Vold netted the deciding goal for the Granite City Lumberjacks in the shootout as Lumberjacks prevailed over the North Iowa Bulls, 4-3 (2-0 SO).

The shootout featured eight attempts between both teams. In addition to the clincher, Granite City got a shootout goal from Vold.

The Lumberjacks overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Granite City trailed 3-1 after a goal by North Iowa's Patrick Sivets at 6:07 in the second period. The Lumberjacks tied things up at 3-3 on a goal by Zac Sikich at 19:39 in the third period.

Granite City was sparked by Vold, who tallied one goal. Vold scored on the power play 16:00 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Granite City. The Lumberjacks had gained a power play chance when Tyler Richison was whistled for high sticking. Matt Raiola assisted on the tally.

Granite City stifled the Bulls' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Lumberjacks forced North Iowa goalie Matthew Bartels to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots.

Granite City was led by Vold, who racked up one goal. Granite City also got a goal from Nathan Kohlenhoefer as well. Other players who recorded assists for Granite City were Alex Koopmeiners and Mitchell Gwost, who each chipped in one.

The Bulls racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 24.0 minutes per game North Iowa had been spending in the box. The Bulls were held below their usual level of production. North Iowa puts an average of 5.4 pucks into the net per game.

The Bulls were helped by James Hughes, who grabbed one goal. Hughes scored 2:03 into the second period to make the score 2-1 North Iowa. Richison provided the assist. Eric Behrend also scored for North Iowa. In addition, North Iowa received assists from Tony Paulson, who had two and Matthew Kaitchuck and Ron Lindgren, who contributed one a piece.

Scott Murray recorded 25 saves for the Lumberjacks. Granite City incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. North Iowa's Bartels stopped 33 shots out of the 36 that he faced. The Bulls registered zero goals on four power play opportunities. North Iowa ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Behrend was ejected from the game.
