Granite City uses big second period to beat North Iowa, 8-3

The Granite City Lumberjacks scored four goals in the second period to pull away from the North Iowa Bulls and clinch an 8-3 win.

Aidan Verbeke was all over the ice for Granite City, as he tallied two goals and two assists in the win. Verbeke scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 45 seconds into the second period to make the score 3-1 Granite City. Drew Otto assisted on the tally. Verbeke's next tally on the power play made the score 4-2 Granite City with 14:09 left in the second period. Otto provided the assist.

The Lumberjacks made Bulls' goaltenders to work in net, finishing with 36 shots and forcing 28 saves. Matthew Bartels made 15 stops and Joseph Moza made 13. Granite City's goal total was higher than its season average. This season, the Lumberjacks average 5.1 goals per contest. Granite City's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in three goals.

Granite City also got points from Matt Peterson, who also racked up one goal and one assist, DJ Vold, who also had one goal and one assist, Blayne Ellson, who also registered one goal and two assists, and Otto, who also tallied one goal and two assists. Matt Raiola also scored for Granite City. More assists for Granite City came via Aaron Azevedo, who had two and Dakoda Menslage, Mitch Humphries, Nathan Kohlenhoefer, and Aaron Storch, who contributed one a piece.

North Iowa's offense operated below it season average. The Bulls put an average of 5.9 pucks into the net per game.

North Iowa was helped by Patrick Sivets, who had one goal. Sivets scored 4:38 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Granite City. Bryan Broders picked up the assist. North Iowa also got a goal from Eric Behrend as well. In addition, North Iowa received assists from Connor Langfield, who had two and Matt Kroska, Jared Ramstead, and James Hughes, who each chipped in one.

Scott Murray made 18 saves for the Lumberjacks on 21 shots. Granite City incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. The Bulls incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
