Bartels, North Iowa blank Minnesota, 5-0

Matthew Bartels recorded a shutout against the Minnesota Flying Aces as the North Iowa Bulls picked up a 5-0 win.

North Iowa pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 29 penalty minutes.

The Bulls were paced by Matt Kroska, who had one goal and one assist. Kroska scored on the power play 8:46 into the first period to make the score 1-0 North Iowa. North Iowa had gotten the advantage when Minnesota's Alec Brandup was sent off for roughing. Eric Behrend picked up the assist.

The Bulls put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Flying Aces to score on any of their nine power plays. North Iowa forced Minnesota goalie Chris Amsden to work between the pipes, taking 55 shots.

Others who scored for North Iowa included Timothy Santopoalo, who had two and Jared Ramstead and Preston Blanek, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for North Iowa were Chancie Hanson, Jake Johnson, Connor Langfield, Andrew Halama, James Hughes, and Kyle Gonzalez, who contributed one a piece.

The Flying Aces racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 11 minors and two majors for 42 minutes in penalty time. Minnesota surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. The Flying Aces did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Minnesota puts an average of 2.4 pucks into the net per game. The Bulls were unable to stop the Flying Aces from sending pucks towards the net, and Minnesota eventually piled up 43 shots on goal.

North Iowa's Bartels stopped 43 shots out of the 43 that he faced. The Bulls registered three goals on nine power play opportunities. Amsden rejected 50 shots on goal for the Flying Aces. For Minnesota, Tomohiko Minase was ejected from the game.
