Granite City wins tough contest against Minnesota, 5-4

The Granite City Lumberjacks and the Minnesota Flying Aces were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Granite City made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-4.

Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Aidan Verbeke secured the win for the Lumberjacks with a goal in the third period.

Granite City was sparked by Verbeke, who racked up one goal. Verbeke scored 19:27 into the third period to make the score 5-4 Granite City. Zac Sikich picked up the assist.

Minnesota was unable to stop the Lumberjacks from sending pucks towards the net, and Granite City eventually piled up 48 shots on goal. The Lumberjacks' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Granite City gives up 1.9 goal per game. The Lumberjacks got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Granite City additionally got points from Aaron Storch, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Matt Peterson also scored for Granite City. Other players who recorded assists for Granite City were Dakoda Menslage, Alex Koopmeiners, Mitchell Gwost, Drew Otto, and Nick Turbitt, who each chipped in one.

The Flying Aces were helped by Payton Trammel, who registered one goal and one assist. Trammel scored 9:24 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Granite City. Tomohiko Minase assisted on the tally. Minnesota also got points from Dylan Nelson, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Blair Seitz, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Minnesota also got a goal from Andre Pison as well. More assists for Minnesota came via Billy Wagner, Patrick Kegley, Blake Williams, and Jared Sprink, who contributed one a piece.

Austin Wilson recorded 18 saves for Granite City. The Lumberjacks incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Minnesota's Chris Amsden stopped 43 shots out of the 48 that he faced. The Flying Aces incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
