Granite City pulls away in second, rolls over Twin City, 8-1

The Granite City Lumberjacks scored four goals in the second period to pull away from the Twin City Steel and clinch an 8-1 win.

Aidan Verbeke was all over the ice for Granite City, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Verbeke scored the first of his two goals at 1:14 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Granite City. Eric Miller provided the assist. Verbeke's next tally made the score 5-1 Granite City with 4:05 left in the second period. The Lumberjacks played down a man on Isaac Hoagland's tripping. Drew Otto picked up the assist.

Granite City was led by goalie Austin Wilson, who finished with 30 saves while allowing one goal. Wilson certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 1.5 entering the contest.

The Lumberjacks' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on nine Twin City power plays. Granite City forced Twin City goalie Jared Schletty to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots. The Lumberjacks outdid their season average for goals scored. This season, Granite City averages 4.9 goals per contest.

Granite City also got points from Mitchell Gwost, who also had one goal and one assist and Otto, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Granite City also got a goal from Tim Brown as well. Other players who recorded assists for Granite City were Matt Peterson, Aaron Azevedo, and Alex Koopmeiners, who each chipped in one.

The Lumberjacks were unable to stop the Steel from sending pucks towards the net, and Twin City eventually piled up 31 shots on goal.

The Steel were led by Tom Bartel, who scored the team's only goal. Bartel scored 4:28 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Granite City.

Granite City incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors. Jared Schletty made 28 saves for Twin City on 36 shots. The Steel incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors.
