Toledo holds on for 5-4 win against Flint

The Flint Jr. Generals tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Toledo Cherokee would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4.

Toledo took a 5-3 lead during the third period, only to have Flint storm back on a Adam Beuthin goal 17:26 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Jr. Generals' 12 penalties came back to haunt them, as Flint let up five goals while on the penalty kill.

The the Cherokee penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 12 minors and one major for 59 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 33.0 minutes per game Toledo had been spending in the box. The Jr. Generals were unable to stop the Cherokee from sending pucks towards the net, and Toledo eventually piled up 33 shots on goal.

The Cherokee were helped by Alec Gerred, who finished with one goal. Gerred scored on the power play 14:33 into the third period to make the score Toledo. Toledo had taken the advantage when Flint's Phillip Garza got sent off for cross checking. Connor Crowe provided the assist. Toledo additionally got points from Tyler Zalecki, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Crowe, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Toledo also got a goal from Jordan Fogarty as well. More assists for Toledo came via Nathan Opblinger, who had one, Andrew Benyo, who had two, and Donnie Nagle, who had four.

The Jr. Generals racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 11 minors and one major for 47 minutes in penalty time. Flint had been averaging 29.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Jr. Generals' offense rang up 34 shots on the Cherokee's net.

Flint was led by Andrew Lay, who tallied one goal and two assists. Lay scored 10:21 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Flint. Edward Osowski assisted on the tally. Flint also got points from Nicholas Gnagni, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Brett Leppek also scored for Flint. In addition, Flint received assists from Nicholas Goetel, Jacob Rosek, Jacob Howie, and Trevor Benaglio, who contributed one a piece.

Josh Cliff made 30 saves for Toledo on 34 shots. For the Cherokee, Brody Duncan and Jake Manders were ejected from the contest. Dominic Orlando recorded 28 saves for the Jr. Generals. Flint registered three goals on eight power play opportunities.
