North Iowa beats Twin City 9-6 as Santopoalo gets hat trick

Timothy Santopoalo netted a hat trick to lead the North Iowa Bulls over the Twin City Steel, 9-6.

Santopoalo got on the scoresheet 12:34 into the first period. He then added goals at 15:41 into the third and at 19:19 into the third.

North Iowa forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 13 minors and two majors for 46 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 22.0 minutes per game the Bulls had been spending in the box. North Iowa's offense rang up 58 shots on Twin City's net. The Bulls surpassed their usual scoring output this season. North Iowa averages 5.4 goals per game.

North Iowa also got points from Matt Kroska, who also finished with one goal and two assists, James Hughes, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Noah Anderson, who also registered one goal and one assist, and Taylor Brown, who also grabbed two goals and one assist. North Iowa also got a goal from Patrick Sivets as well. Other players who recorded assists for North Iowa were Kyle Krueger, who had two, Connor Langfield, who had three, and Ron Lindgren, Jake Johnson, Eric Behrend, and Jared Ramstead, who contributed one a piece.

The the Steel penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and two majors for 40 minutes in penalty time. Twin City surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. The Bulls were unable to stop the Steel from sending pucks towards the net, and Twin City eventually piled up 47 shots on goal. The Steel bested their season scoring average. Twin City has scored at the pace of 2.8 goals per game during the current campaign.

The Steel were led by Marvin Powell, who tallied two goals and one assist. Powell scored the first of his two goals short handed at 17:10 into the first period to make the score 3-2 North Iowa. A slashing call on Trey Hughes put Twin City on the penalty kill. Dan Billiar provided the assist. Powell's next tally short handed made the score 6-5 North Iowa with 9:37 left in the third period. An interference penalty on Sivets had put the Steel on the power play. Kegan Storjohann assisted on the tally. Tom Bartel also scored for Twin City. More assists for Twin City came via Nicholas Schreiner, who had one.

Matthew Bartels rejected 41 shots on goal for North Iowa. The Bulls registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. Joey Garapolo recorded 49 saves for Twin City. The Steel registered three goals on 11 power play opportunities. Twin City ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Marshall Cook was ejected from the game.
