GAME RECAP

Flint rips Toledo, 5-2

Iceland Arena    Sat, Sep 29, 2012

The Toledo Cherokee had trouble finding ways to stop the Flint Jr. Generals, which beat Cherokee, 5-2.

Flint got the win behind a great game by Andrew Lay, who had two goals and one assist. Lay scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 4:10 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Flint. The Jr. Generals had gained a power play chance when Donnie Nagle was whistled for holding. Phillip Garza assisted on the tally. Lay's next tally on the power play made the score 5-2 Flint with 49 seconds left in the third period. Garza provided the assist.

Flint pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 24 penalty minutes.

The Jr. Generals kept Toledo's goalie busy throughout the game, and Nathan Miller made 31 saves on 36 shots. Flint's penalty kill managed to stymie the Cherokee's power play, giving up only one goal while playing with a man down.

Edward Osowski also scored for Flint. In addition, Flint received assists from Alex Compean, Nicholas Gnagni, and Brett Leppek, who contributed one a piece and Nicholas Goetel and Trevor Benaglio, who each chipped in two.

The Jr. Generals were unable to stop Toledo from sending pucks towards the net, and the Cherokee eventually piled up 33 shots on goal.

Toledo was helped by Brandon Layman, who registered one goal. Layman scored on the power play 13:20 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Flint. The Cherokee had taken the advantage when Flint's Osowski got sent off for head contact. Jake Manders assisted on the tally. Toledo also got a goal from Nicholas Brazeal as well. Other players who recorded assists for Toledo were Tyler Zalecki and Nathan Opblinger, who contributed one a piece.

Ted Barile rejected 31 shots on goal for the Jr. Generals. Flint registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. Toledo incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
