Granite City beats Alexandria 3-2 after comeback scareArmadillo Deck Arena East Fri, Sep 28, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Granite City Lumberjacks survived a determined comeback attempt by the Alexandria Blizzard on the way to a 3-2 win. Granite City made the score 3-1 on a goal by Drew Otto at 39 seconds in the third period, and Alexandria got as close as 3-2 when Tanner Duffney scored 16:11 into the third period. Otto had two goals to lead the Lumberjacks to victory. The Granite City penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. The Lumberjacks had been averaging 25.0 minutes in penalties per game. Granite City also got a goal from Eric Miller as well. Other players who recorded assists for Granite City were Aidan Verbeke, who had two and Colten Thiel and Blayne Ellson, who contributed one a piece. The Blizzard struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as they finished the game with 29 penalty minutes for six opposing power plays. Alexandria was held back by its power play unit, which tallied one goal on nine chances. The Blizzard were helped by Joe Anderson, who grabbed one goal. Anderson scored 6:46 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Granite City. Garrett Skinner assisted on the tally. In addition, Alexandria received assists from Ian Eckland and Spencer Peratalo, who each chipped in one. Scott Murray rejected 28 shots on goal for Granite City. For the Lumberjacks, Dakoda Menslage was ejected from the game. Kyle Miller recorded 23 saves for Alexandria. The Blizzard ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Ryen Zerfas was ejected from the game.
