Texas uses shootout to best Topeka, 5-4 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Texas Tornado defeated the Topeka RoadRunners in a shootout 5-4 (2-1 SO).

The shootout featured 10 attempts between both teams. Topeka's shootout goal was scored by Tyler Poulsen. Texas also got a shootout goal from Scott Conway.

The Tornado came back from a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. Texas was down 3-0 after a short handed goal by the RoadRunners' Kyle Sharkey at 13:06 in the first period. The Tornado knotted things up at 4-4 on a goal by Conway at 19:31 in the third period.

Justin Greenberg was all over the ice for Texas, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Greenberg scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 13:48 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Topeka. The Tornado had gained a power play chance when Drew Kariofiles was whistled for holding. Andrew Mayer provided the assist. Greenberg's next tally on the power play made the score 3-2 Topeka with 8:45 left in the second period. Texas earned a power play opportunity when Luke Veitch was put in the box for slashing. Mayer assisted on the tally.

The Tornado was effective with a man advantage, and put in two goals while on the power play.

Brandon Hawkins also scored for Texas. More assists for Texas came via Michael Hoy, who had one.

Topeka averages 24.6 shots on goal per game, but only sent 18 pucks on net against Texas. The RoadRunners' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Topeka gives up 2.5 goals per game. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

The RoadRunners were helped by Tomas Nechala, who finished with one goal. Nechala scored 3:43 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Topeka. Tyler Andrew picked up the assist. Topeka also got points from Sharkey, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Topeka also got a goal from Trace Strahle as well.

Hunter Leisner rejected 14 shots on goal for the Tornado. Texas ended with 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. Topeka's Spencer Viele stopped 19 shots out of the 23 that he faced. The RoadRunners totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 1-for-5 on the power play.
