Kenai River vanquishes Fairbanks in shootout, 5-4 (3-2 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Kenai River Brown Bears defeated the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in a shootout 5-4 (3-2 SO).

The shootout lasted for nine attempts between the teams. Fairbanks got shootout goals from Max Birkinbine and Doug Rose. In addition to the clincher, Kenai River got shootout goals from Alec Butcher and Zac Lazzaro.

Matt Seidel had four goals to lead the Brown Bears to victory. Seidel notched his first tally 2:00 into the first period. He then added goals at 3:35 into the second, at 13:50 into the second, and at 18:11 into the second.

With 38 shots on target during the contest, Kenai River exceeded the 28.4 shots it averages per game this year.

More assists for Kenai River came via Jacob Davidson, who had one and Dylan Meier and Chris Nuth, who contributed three a piece.

The Ice Dogs' normally stingy defense allowed more goals than usual. Fairbanks gives up 2.4 goals per game. The Ice Dogs got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. By firing 33 shots on goal, Fairbanks exceeded the 27.3 shots it averages per game this year.

The Ice Dogs were led by Rose, who tallied two goals. Rose scored the first of his two goals at 9:09 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Rose's next tally made the score 4-4 with 11:36 left in the third period. Fairbanks earned a power play opportunity when Jake Bushey was put in the box for interference. Birkinbine picked up the assist. Garret Clemment also scored for Fairbanks. Other players who recorded assists for Fairbanks were Colton Wolter, Ethan Somoza, and Jacob Hetz, who each chipped in one.

Evan McCarthy rejected 29 shots on goal for the Brown Bears. Kenai River incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Steve Perry made 33 saves for the Ice Dogs on 37 shots. Fairbanks incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
