Fresno penalty kill dominates in 5-2 defeat of Kenai River

The Kenai River Brown Bears failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Fresno Monsters shook off a number of penalties to win, 5-2.

Fresno was sparked by Mitchell Snyder, who tallied one goal. Snyder scored 47 seconds into the third period to make the score 3-1 Fresno. Troy Grahl provided the assist.

The Monsters racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and two majors for 28 minutes in penalty time. Fresno had been averaging 19.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Monsters put 29 shots on net during the contest, more than the 16.1 they average per game. Fresno found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, the Monsters average 2.3 goals per contest.

Fresno additionally got points from Matt Salituro, who also had one goal and one assist and Trevor Husch, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Fresno also got a goal from Andrew Herlofsky as well. Other players who recorded assists for Fresno were Newton Fuller, Dan Sherer, and Gordon Wells, who each chipped in one.

The Kenai River penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 17.0 minutes per game the Brown Bears had been spending in the box. The 63 shots that Kenai River put on net surpassed the Brown Bears' average of 26.3 shots per game this season.

Kenai River was helped by Bryan Hodges, who had one goal. Hodges scored 14:46 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Kenai River. Brad Duwe picked up the assist. Brad LeLievre also scored for Kenai River. In addition, Kenai River received assists from Ryan Walker, Mikhail Bushinski, and Zack Zulkanycz, who contributed one a piece.

Fresno's Tomas Sholl stopped 61 shots out of the 63 that he faced. The Monsters registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. Evan McCarthy rejected 24 shots on goal for the Brown Bears. Kenai River registered one goal on seven power play opportunities.
