Nelson Center    Sat, Feb 23, 2013

The Springfield Jr. Blues could not stop the Soo Eagles' Sean Murphy, who tallied a hat trick in a 6-5 win.

Murphy notched his first tally 2:36 into the second period. He then added goals at 12:38 into the third and at 17:53 into the third.

Soo's goal total was higher than its season average. This season, the Eagles average 3.3 goals per contest. Soo's penalty kill was ineffective, and let in four goals to Springfield's power play unit. The Eagles relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Murphy, Jared VanWormer and Brandon Adams took 17 of the team's 30 shots. Soo's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Eagles finished with 24 penalty minutes.

Soo also got points from Adams, who also tallied one goal and one assist, VanWormer, who also racked up one goal and three assists to lead the team in points, and Chris Waterstreet, who also registered one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Soo were Eric Rivard, who had three and Alex Robert and Pat Thompson, who contributed one a piece.

The Jr. Blues managed to stay out of the box better than usual, racking up one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Springfield ended up below its season average of 15.0 penalty minutes per game. The Jr. Blues bested their season scoring average. Springfield averages 2.6 goals per game. The Jr. Blues put 56 shots on net during the contest, more than the 26.4 they average per game.

Springfield was led by Brett Skibba, who had two goals and one assist. Skibba scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 5:17 into the third period to make the score 3-3. The Jr. Blues had gained a power play chance when Mike Sabatini was whistled for holding. Davis Dekorte picked up the assist. Skibba's next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 Springfield with 9:21 left in the third period. Springfield had taken the advantage when Soo's VanWormer got sent off for tripping. Terry Leibo assisted on the tally. Nate Chasteen also scored for Springfield. In addition, Springfield received assists from Jack Sloan, Ji Young Li, Ryan Atkinson, and Jon Carkeek, who each chipped in one.
