Minot uses shootout to best Austin, 3-2 (2-0 SO)Riverside Fri, Feb 15, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Minot Minotauros defeated the Austin Bruins in a shootout 3-2 (2-0 SO). The two teams needed nine turns to complete the shootout. Minot also got a shootout goal from Mason Morelli.The Minotauros came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Minot was down 2-0 after a short handed goal by Austin's Cody Dixon at 9:59 in the second period. The Minotauros knotted things up at 2-2 on a goal by Jake McCann at 8:24 in the third period. Minot put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Bruins to score on any of their four power plays. The Minotauros were often in penalty trouble, as it ended with six minors and two majors for 22 minutes in penalty time. Minot was helped by Jadin Martin, who tallied one goal. Martin scored on the power play 11:43 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Austin. A cross checking penalty on Travis Maxwell had put the Minotauros on the power play. Jerry Laakso provided the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Minot were Scott Dornbrock and Stephen Sherman, who contributed one a piece. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. Josh Bretner also scored for Austin. More assists for Austin came via Michael Bond, John Simonson, Jay Dickman, and Brandon Wahlin, who each chipped in one. Tyler Parks made 25 saves for Minot on 27 shots. The Minotauros registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Nicholas Lehr recorded 24 saves for Austin. The Bruins ended with 31 minutes in penalty time with three minors and three majors. Austin ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Maxwell was ejected from the game.
