Amarillo squeaks by Texas, 3-2Amarillo Fri, Feb 15, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Amarillo Bulls escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Texas Tornado. Amarillo gained the winning advantage on a goal by Blake Roubos 18:16 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer. The Bulls were led by Roubos, who had one goal. The Amarillo penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and one major for 23 minutes in penalty time. The Bulls had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game. Amarillo stifled Texas' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Bulls put 41 shots on net during the contest, more than the 32.9 they average per game. Amarillo also got points from Gage Christianson, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Brady Ferguson also scored for Amarillo. In addition, Amarillo received assists from Tyler Gernhofer, TJ Sarcona, Ryan Cole, Clint Carlisle, and Matt Sieckhaus, who each chipped in one. The Tornado forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. Texas surpassed its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game. The Tornado put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Amarillo to score on any of its four power plays. Texas was led by CJ Reuschlein, who registered one goal and one assist. Reuschlein scored short handed 4:15 into the third period to make the score 2-2. The Tornado were on a disadvantage when Michael Hoy went off the ice for hooking. Texas also got a goal from Mitchell McPherson as well. Other players who recorded assists for Texas were Brandon Hawkins, who had one. The Bulls' Paul Berrafato stopped 25 shots out of the 27 that he faced. Hunter Leisner made 38 saves for Texas on 41 shots. The Tornado registered zero goals on five power play opportunities.
