Brookings outlasts Minot, 4-2Larson Ice Center Red Sat, Feb 09, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The game between the Brookings Blizzard and the Minot Minotauros was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Brookings emerged with a 4-2 win. No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Nick DeCenzo at 5:26 of the third period. Evan Hesse was all over the ice for the Blizzard, as he grabbed two goals in the win. Hesse's tallies came on the power play at 16:27 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Brookings and 19:53 into the third to make the score 4-2 Brookings. Brookings' penalty kill excelled, as the Blizzard gave up one goal despite allowing seven power plays. By firing 36 shots on goal, Brookings exceeded the 26.2 shots it averages per game this year. Brookings also got a goal from Thomas Williams as well. Other players who recorded assists for Brookings were Cody Marooney, who had two and Drew Brevig, Derek Sand, and Reed Whiteside, who each chipped in one. Minot forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The Minotauros had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game. Minot's defensemen also contributed in the offensive zone and ended up with 11 shots between them. The Minotauros were helped by Lucas Oliver, who had one goal. Oliver scored 15:06 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Tim Donohue provided the assist. Jerry Laakso also scored for Minot. More assists for Minot came via Denis Dalidovich, Jake OBorsky, and Mason Morelli, who contributed one a piece. Drew Weigman rejected 22 shots on goal for the Blizzard. Brookings totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 1-for-6 on the power play. Minot's Ryan Ruck stopped 32 shots out of the 35 that he faced.
