Austin vanquishes Bismarck in shootout, 6-5 (3-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Austin Bruins defeated the Bismarck Bobcats in a shootout 6-5 (3-0 SO).

The two teams needed seven turns to complete the shootout. In addition to the clincher, Austin got shootout goals from Jay Dickman and AJ Reid.

The Bruins saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Austin made the score 5-3 on a power play goal by Brandon Wahlin at 59 seconds in the third period. Bismarck evened things up at 5-5 on a power play goal by Joe Giordano at 15:59 in the third period.

The Bruins got the win on the strength of a great game by Reid, who had one goal and three assists. Reid scored 1:34 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Austin. Ladislav Zikmund provided the assist.

Austin forced Bobcats' goaltenders to work without much rest, ripping 33 shots and forcing 27 saves. Bryan Nies made eight stops and Aaron Nelson made 19. The Bruins surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Austin has scored at the pace of 3.8 goals per game during the current campaign. The Bruins took advantage of the Bobcats' penalties, tallying three goals off of five power play opportunities. Austin could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

Austin additionally got points from Dickman, who also registered one goal and two assists. Austin also got a goal from CJ Smith as well. More assists for Austin came via Jake Flynn, Cody Dixon, John Simonson, and Riley Colvard, who contributed one a piece.

Bismarck outdid its season average for goals scored. The Bobcats average 2.9 goals per game. Bismarck's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Bobcats give up 2.3 goals per game.

Bismarck was led by Adam Knochenmus, who registered one goal and two assists. Knochenmus scored 12:16 into the third period to make the score 5-4 Austin. Bob Kinne assisted on the tally. Bismarck also got points from Giordano, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Levi Blom also scored for Bismarck. Other players who recorded assists for Bismarck were Mike Dockry, Nate Repensky, Matt Pohlkamp, Sam Wolfe, and Cory Chapman, who each chipped in one.

Nicholas Lehr made 23 saves for the Bruins on 28 shots. The Bobcats incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
