Corpus Christi vanquishes Topeka in shootout, 3-2 (2-0 SO)Kansas ExpoCentre Fri, Feb 01, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Corpus Christi IceRays defeated the Topeka RoadRunners in a shootout 3-2 (2-0 SO). The two teams needed nine turns to complete the shootout. In addition to the clincher, Corpus Christi got a shootout goal from Charles Baldwin.The IceRays were led by Ryan McNeely, who tallied one goal and one assist. McNeely scored 3:47 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Corpus Christi. Rudy Sulmonde assisted on the tally. Beau Walker also scored for Corpus Christi. More assists for Corpus Christi came via AJ Jarosz and Grant Hutton, who contributed one a piece. Topeka did not rack up many penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and one major for 19 minutes in penalty time. The RoadRunners stayed under their season average of 24.0 penalties minutes per game this season. Topeka stifled Corpus Christi's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The RoadRunners' offense was clicking better than usual and put 33 shots on goal during the game, better than the 21.3 shots per game they average. Topeka was helped by Drew Kariofiles, who finished with one goal. Kariofiles scored 6:13 into the third period to make the score 2-2. Jake Kamrass provided the assist. Topeka also got a goal from Patrick Pollock as well. In addition, Topeka received assists from Michal Pastor, Kyle Sharkey, and Tyler Groat, who each chipped in one. The IceRays' Hayden Stewart stopped 31 shots out of the 33 that he faced. Corpus Christi totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 0-for-6 on the power play. Mackenzie Sawyer rejected 18 shots on goal for the RoadRunners. Topeka registered one goal on five power play opportunities.
