Fresno falls apart in second, loses to Kenai River, 6-1

The Fresno Monsters allowed the Kenai River Brown Bears to net three goals during the second period and fell, 6-1.

Kenai River's Marcus Zelzer was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 28 saves and let only one puck past him. Zelzer certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.28 entering the contest.

The Brown Bears were paced by Mikhail Bushinski, who finished with one goal. Bushinski scored on the power play 12:18 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Kenai River. A holding penalty on Trevor Husch had put Kenai River on the power play. Jacob Davidson provided the assist.

The Brown Bears' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Fresno power plays. Kenai River's goal total was higher than its season average. The Brown Bears average 3.0 goals per game.

Others who scored for Kenai River included Alec Butcher, who had one and Brad LeLievre and Matt Seidel, who each put in two. Other players who recorded assists for Kenai River were Albin Karlsson, Alex Jackstadt, Chris Nuth, and Zac Lazzaro, who contributed one a piece and Carson Vance, Conor Deal, and Bryan Hodges, who each chipped in two.

Fresno racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 18.0 minutes per game the Monsters had been spending in the box. Fresno put 29 shots on net during the contest, more than the 19.2 it averages per game. The Monsters' defensemen bolstered Fresno's offensive attack, as they bombarded Zelzer with 13 shots.

The Monsters were led by Mitchell Snyder, who took three shots.

Kenai River totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play. Macauley Haight took the loss and made 19 saves before being replaced by Tomas Sholl who made two saves.
