Amarillo uses early goal to top Topeka, 3-1Kansas ExpoCentre Sat, Jan 26, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
Ryan Cole gave the Amarillo Bulls the lead in the first period, and the Topeka RoadRunners was never able to catch up in a close game that ended 3-1. Cole provided Amarillo with the game-winning tally when he scored 11:53 into the the first period. The Bulls earned a power play opportunity when Sean Gaffney was put in the box for tripping. John Rey provided the assist.Topeka's power play was ineffective against Amarillo's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded. The Bulls were led by Clint Carlisle, who racked up one goal. Carlisle scored 17 seconds into the third period to make the score 2-0 Amarillo. Amarillo was often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and three majors for 53 minutes in penalty time. The Bulls had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game. Amarillo stifled the RoadRunners' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Bulls' offense was clicking better than usual and put 39 shots on goal during the game, better than the 33.2 shots per game they average. Amarillo also got a goal from Gage Christianson as well. More assists for Amarillo came via Hampus Gustafsson and Mike Davis, who each chipped in one. Topeka racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and four majors for 52 minutes in penalty time. The RoadRunners surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. Topeka was below its usual level of shot production, taking 18 shots compared to the 23.9 the RoadRunners average. Topeka was led by Ross Luedtke, who scored the team's only goal. Luedtke scored 4:16 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Amarillo. Brandon Brossoit picked up the assist. Paul Berrafato recorded 17 saves for Amarillo. The Bulls registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. For Amarillo, Omar Mullan was ejected from the game. Spencer Viele rejected 36 shots on goal for the RoadRunners. Team's Kevin Patterson and Tyler Poulsen were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
