Amarillo    Sat, Jan 19, 2013

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Corpus Christi IceRays defeated the Amarillo Bulls in a shootout 4-3 (3-1 SO).

The two teams needed nine turns to complete the shootout. Amarillo got a shootout goal from Tyler Gernhofer. In addition to the clincher, Corpus Christi got shootout goals from Charles Baldwin and Emil Romig.

The IceRays struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as they finished the game with 20 penalty minutes for five opposing power plays. Corpus Christi relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Beau Walker, Rudy Sulmonde and Michael Economos took 13 of the team's 23 shots. The IceRays got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Corpus Christi was helped by Wayland Williams, who grabbed one goal. Williams scored on the power play 14:55 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Corpus Christi. The IceRays had gotten the advantage when the Bulls' Geoff Fortman was sent off for fighting. Sulmonde picked up the assist. Jalen Schulz also scored for Corpus Christi. Other players who recorded assists for Corpus Christi were Romig and Brandon Berkley, who each chipped in one.

Amarillo was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 20 penalty minutes. By firing 52 shots on goal, the Bulls exceeded the 34.9 shots they average per game this year.

Amarillo was helped by Ryan Cole, who tallied one goal. Cole scored 14:23 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Gage Christianson provided the assist.
