Kalamazoo blows out Michigan, 5-1Blue Rink Sun, Jan 13, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings were firing on all cylinders against the Michigan Warriors, and when the final buzzer sounded Jr. K-Wings emerged with a 5-1 win. Michigan was stymied by Kalamazoo netminder Alex Okicki, who stopped 36 shots during the victory. Okicki managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.77 prior to the game. The Jr. K-Wings were led by Brendan Vetter, who had one goal and one assist. Vetter scored 18:27 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Kalamazoo. Mac McDonnell assisted on the tally. Kalamazoo excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The defensemen of the Jr. K-Wings were also effective in the Warriors' zone, and came away with two goals. The 46 shots that Kalamazoo put on net surpassed the Jr. K-Wings' average of 26.7 shots per game this season. Kalamazoo additionally got points from Brett Beauvais, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Kalamazoo also got a goal from Lucas Kohls as well. More assists for Kalamazoo came via Robbie Payne, who had two and Patrick Spellacy, Matt Wurst, and Kyle Gattelaro, who each chipped in one. Michigan racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and one major for 23 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 14.0 minutes per game the Warriors had been spending in the box. Michigan's offense rang up 37 shots on Kalamazoo's net. The Jr. K-Wings totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 2-for-5 on the power play. Trevor Gorsuch made 41 saves for the Warriors on 46 shots.
