Austin rolls over Brookings, 6-2Larson Ice Center Red Sat, Jan 12, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Brookings Blizzard had trouble finding ways to stop the Austin Bruins, which beat Blizzard, 6-2. John Simonson had two goals and one assist to lead Austin. Simonson scored the first of his two goals at 5:53 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Austin. Jay Dickman picked up the assist. Simonson's next tally made the score 3-0 Austin with 12 seconds left in the second period. The Bruins had gained a power play chance when Spencer Peratalo was whistled for hooking. CJ Smith provided the assist. Austin pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 49 penalty minutes. The Bruins stifled Brookings' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Austin's goal total was higher than its season average. This season, the Bruins average 3.9 goals per contest. Austin put 38 shots on net during the contest, more than the 27.8 it averages per game. Austin also got points from Smith, who also tallied two goals and one assist to lead the team in points and Dickman, who also had one goal and one assist. Riley Colvard also scored for Austin. More assists for Austin came via Drew Anderson, Jake Flynn, and Jason Pawloski, who contributed one a piece and Josh Bretner, Chris Fischer, and AJ Reid, who each chipped in two. The Blizzard racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and one major for 53 minutes in penalty time. Brookings had been averaging 23.0 minutes in penalties per game. By firing 34 shots on goal, the Blizzard exceeded the 26.4 shots they average per game this year. Pawloski rejected 32 shots on goal for the Bruins. Austin registered two goals on 10 power play opportunities. For the Bruins, Colvard was ejected from the game. Brookings took out Erick Majerle after he had made 18 saves and installed Drew Weigman in goal, where he finished with 14 saves and the loss. The Blizzard registered zero goals on seven power play opportunities. Brookings ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Adam Cavalinni was ejected from the game.
