Springfield rides Leon to victory over Kenai River, 2-1

A stellar performance between the pipes by Matt Leon helped the Springfield Jr. Blues defeat the Kenai River Brown Bears, 2-1.

Springfield was led by Ryan Atkinson, who registered one goal. Atkinson scored 11:14 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Springfield. Parker Johnson picked up the assist.

The Jr. Blues' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Kenai River power plays. By firing 30 shots on goal, Springfield exceeded the 27.2 shots it averages per game this year.

Jeff McFarland also scored for Springfield. More assists for Springfield came via Terry Leibo, who had one.

Kenai River excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The Brown Bears could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Kenai River puts an average of 3.1 pucks into the net per game. With 42 shots on target during the contest, the Brown Bears exceeded the 21.0 shots they average per game this year.

Kenai River was led by Ryan Walker, who scored the team's only goal. Walker scored 12:40 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Chris Nuth assisted on the tally.

Leon recorded 41 saves for the Jr. Blues. Springfield incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Brown Bears' Gustaf Johansson stopped 28 shots out of the 30 that he faced. Kenai River incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
