Kalamazoo vanquishes Port Huron in shootout, 3-2 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings defeated the Port Huron Fighting Falcons in a shootout 3-2 (2-1 SO).

The shootout lasted for 12 attempts between the teams. Port Huron got a shootout goal from Ian Miller. Kalamazoo also got a shootout goal from Taylor Burden.

The Jr. K-Wings pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 10 penalty minutes.

Kalamazoo put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Fighting Falcons to score on any of their six power plays. The Jr. K-Wings put 28 shots on net during the contest, more than the 24.9 they average per game.

Kalamazoo was helped by Brennan Sanford, who finished with one goal. Sanford scored 12:04 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Kalamazoo. Nick Kovalchik provided the assist. Kalamazoo also got a goal from Burden as well. Other players who recorded assists for Kalamazoo were Robbie Payne and Mikhail Bushinski, who each chipped in one.

Port Huron excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. With 33 shots on target during the contest, the Fighting Falcons exceeded the 24.8 shots they average per game this year.

Port Huron was helped by Nick Horne, who registered one goal. Horne scored 1:59 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Dunk Abbott assisted on the tally. Brandon Lukezic also scored for Port Huron. In addition, Port Huron received assists from Tommy Abrams, who had one and Bryan Yim, who had two.

Alex Okicki rejected 31 shots on goal for the Jr. K-Wings. Alex Blankenburg recorded 25 saves for the Fighting Falcons. Port Huron incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
