Michigan vanquishes Johnstown in shootout, 2-1 (3-2 SO)

Dort Event Center 1    Sat, Jan 05, 2013

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Michigan Warriors defeated the Johnstown Tomahawks in a shootout 2-1 (3-2 SO).

The shootout featured nine attempts between both teams. Johnstown got shootout goals from Jordan Watt and Mitch Kontny. Michigan's other shootout goals were scored by Zack Szajner and Corey Schueneman.

The Warriors overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Michigan trailed 1-0 after a goal by the Tomahawks' Andrew McDonald at 4:24 in the second period. The Warriors tied things up at 1-1 on a power play goal by Jake Hopfner at 19:20 in the second period.

Johnstown was stymied by Michigan netminder Trevor Gorsuch, who stopped 29 shots during the victory. Gorsuch managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.74 prior to the game.

The Warriors forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and two majors for 22 minutes in penalty time. Michigan surpassed its season average of 13.0 penalty minutes per game. The Warriors stifled the Tomahawks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The 38 shots that Michigan put on net surpassed the Warriors' average of 27.5 shots per game this season.

More assists for Michigan came via Schueneman and AJ Marcinek, who contributed one a piece.

Johnstown racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and two majors for 44 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 23.0 minutes per game the Tomahawks had been spending in the box. Johnstown was held below its usual level of production. The Tomahawks put an average of 3.2 pucks into the net per game. With 30 shots on target during the contest, Johnstown exceeded the 27.2 shots it averages per game this year.

In addition, Johnstown received assists from Jake Fairchild, who had one.

Michigan registered one goal on five power play opportunities. The Tomahawks' Collin Brennan stopped 36 shots out of the 37 that he faced.
