Corpus Christi blows out Odessa, 8-1

The Corpus Christi IceRays had a three-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to an 8-1 win over the Odessa Jackalopes.

Corpus Christi was led by goalie Hayden Stewart, who finished with 32 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Stewart will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.99.

The IceRays excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. Corpus Christi found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. The IceRays average 3.1 goals per game. The 44 shots that Corpus Christi put on net surpassed the IceRays' average of 26.0 shots per game this season.

Corpus Christi was helped by Rudy Sulmonde, who registered two goals and one assist. Sulmonde scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 19:55 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Corpus Christi. The IceRays had taken the advantage when Odessa's Taylor Portner got sent off for tripping. Wayland Williams picked up the assist. Sulmonde's next tally on the power play made the score 7-1 Corpus Christi with 1:42 left in the third period. Perry DArrisso provided the assist. Corpus Christi also got points from Brandon Smith, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, DArrisso, who also had one goal and two assists, and Brandon Berkley, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Corpus Christi included Beau Walker, who had one and Michael Economos, who had two. More assists for Corpus Christi came via Jalen Schulz, Caleb OBrien, Ryan Chiasson, and Eric Purcell, who contributed one a piece.

The Jackalopes' offense was clicking better than usual and put 33 shots on goal during the game, better than the 19.5 shots per game they average.

Odessa was led by Lawrence Cornellier, who scored the team's only goal. Cornellier scored 9:52 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Corpus Christi. Matthew Montemurro assisted on the tally.

Corpus Christi incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Phil Heinle made four saves before being replaced by Nick Deery, who took the loss and made 32 saves. The Jackalopes incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
