Johnstown rips Kalamazoo, 4-1Cambria County War Memorial Sat, Nov 10, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Johnstown Tomahawks were firing on all cylinders against the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings, and when the final buzzer sounded Tomahawks emerged with a 4-1 win. Johnstown's penalty kill excelled, as the Tomahawks gave up one goal despite allowing eight power plays. Johnstown was paced by Andrew McDonald, who grabbed one goal and one assist. McDonald scored 19:19 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Johnstown. Jaycob McCombs assisted on the tally. The Tomahawks' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Johnstown finished with 26 penalty minutes. Johnstown also got a goal from Zack Wallace as well. In addition, Johnstown received assists from Cody Boyd, Casey Nelson, JB Baker, and Jeff Bergh, who each chipped in one. Kalamazoo was often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. The Jr. K-Wings had been averaging 17.0 minutes in penalties per game. Kalamazoo's offense operated below it season average. The Jr. K-Wings average 3.6 goals per game. Kalamazoo relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Brett Beauvais, Robbie Payne and Brendan Vetter took 13 of the team's 22 shots. The defense for the Jr. K-Wings played an important role offensively, racking up nine shots on goal. Kalamazoo was led by Danny Hamburg, who scored the team's only goal. Hamburg scored on the power play 9:49 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Johnstown. The Jr. K-Wings had gotten the advantage when the Tomahawks' Boyd was sent off for tripping. Payne picked up the assist. Johnstown's Chris Truehl stopped 21 shots out of the 22 that he faced. The Tomahawks registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. Alex Okicki made 17 saves for Kalamazoo on 21 shots.
