Minot uses shootout to best Austin, 5-4 (3-2 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Minot Minotauros defeated the Austin Bruins in a shootout 5-4 (3-2 SO).

The two teams needed 12 turns to complete the shootout. Austin got shootout goals from CJ Smith and AJ Reid. In addition to the clincher, Minot got shootout goals from Cody Milligan and Matt Audette.

The Minotauros' penalty kill excelled, as Minot gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

The Minotauros' offense was clicking better than usual and put 28 shots on goal during the game, better than the 22.9 shots per game they average. Minot outdid its season average for goals scored. The Minotauros have scored at the pace of 2.7 goals per game during the current campaign. Minot was often in penalty trouble, as it ended with eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time.

The Minotauros were led by Jake OBorsky, who tallied two goals and one assist. OBorsky scored the first of his two goals at 16:17 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Minot. Stephen Sherman picked up the assist. OBorsky's next tally made the score 3-2 Minot with 10:06 left in the second period. Minot had taken the advantage when the Bruins' Chris Fischer got sent off for cross checking. David Dalbec assisted on the tally. Minot also got points from Wesley Iverson, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Milligan also scored for Minot. In addition, Minot received assists from Chance Crregger, Jadin Martin, and Collin Abitz, who each chipped in one.

The Austin penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and one major for 47 minutes in penalty time. The Bruins had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game. With 37 shots on target during the contest, Austin exceeded the 28.6 shots it averages per game this year.

The Bruins were led by Brandon Wahlin, who racked up two goals. Wahlin scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 14:13 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Austin had gotten the advantage when the Minotauros' Lucas Oliver was sent off for tripping. Cody Dixon picked up the assist. Wahlin's next tally on the power play made the score 3-3 with 6:20 left in the second period. Riley Colvard assisted on the tally. Austin also got a goal from Smith as well. Other players who recorded assists for Austin were Josh Bretner, who had one and Reid, who had three.

Tyler Parks recorded 33 saves for Minot. The Minotauros registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. The Bruins' Nicholas Lehr stopped 23 shots out of the 27 that he faced.
