Johnstown uses early goal to top Kalamazoo, 4-3

Connor Wright gave the Johnstown Tomahawks the lead in the first period, and the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings was never able to catch up in a close game that ended 4-3.

Johnstown took over the lead for good with a goal by Wright at 17:38 in the first period. The Tomahawks had gained a power play chance when Jesse Junttila was whistled for slashing. Ian Spencer assisted on the tally.

Johnstown was led by Casey Nelson, who racked up one goal. Nelson scored on the power play 14:35 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Johnstown. A hooking penalty on Nick Kovalchik had put the Tomahawks on the power play. Mitch Kontny picked up the assist.

Johnstown put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Kalamazoo to score on any of its four power plays. With 35 shots on target during the contest, the Tomahawks exceeded the 25.9 shots they average per game this year.

Jaycob McCombs also scored for Johnstown. In addition, Johnstown received assists from Andrew McDonald, who had two and Jordan Watt and Jesse Kessler, who contributed one a piece.

The Jr. K-Wings were helped by Mikhail Bushinski, who had one goal. Bushinski scored 10:01 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Johnstown. Taylor Burden assisted on the tally. Kalamazoo also got points from Robbie Payne, who also registered one goal and one assist. Kalamazoo also got a goal from Brett Beauvais as well. Other players who recorded assists for Kalamazoo were Davis Dekorte, who had two and Josh Dangel and Luc Boby, who each chipped in one.

Collin Brennan took the win and made 18 saves before being replaced by Chris Truehl who made six saves. Johnstown incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Marcus Due-Boje made 31 saves for Kalamazoo on 35 shots. The Jr. K-Wings incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
