Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Topeka RoadRunners defeated the Odessa Jackalopes in a shootout 5-4 (1-0 SO). The shootout lasted for 14 attempts between the teams.Topeka came back from a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. The RoadRunners trailed 4-1 after a power play goal by Odessa's Ryan Doucet at 19:22 in the second period. Topeka knotted things up at 4-4 on a goal by Kyle Sharkey at 18:50 in the third period. Sean Gaffney was all over the ice for the RoadRunners, as he tallied one goal and two assists in the win. Gaffney scored 5:50 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Odessa. Trace Strahle provided the assist. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 7:13 into the first period. Five fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. The Topeka penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and two majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. The RoadRunners surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game. Topeka's penalty kill unit could not stop the Jackalopes' power play, which converted on three of four opportunities. The RoadRunners' normally stingy defense allowed more goals than usual. Topeka is averaging 1.9 goal against for the season. The defensemen of the RoadRunners were also effective in Odessa's zone, and came away with two goals. With 37 shots on target during the contest, Topeka exceeded the 26.6 shots it averages per game this year. Topeka also got points from Strahle, who also registered one goal and one assist and Sharkey, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Michal Pastor also scored for Topeka. More assists for Topeka came via Kevin Patterson, Dan Dupell, Tyler Poulsen, and Tyler Groat, who contributed one a piece. The Jackalopes forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up five minors and three majors for 35 minutes in penalty time. Odessa had been averaging 22.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Jackalopes' offense was helped by the efforts of their defensemen, who managed to put 15 shots on net during the game. The 33 shots that Odessa put on net surpassed the Jackalopes' average of 18.9 shots per game this season. Odessa was led by Lawrence Cornellier, who had three goals and one assist. Odessa additionally got points from Doucet, who also racked up one goal and two assists. In addition, Odessa received assists from Jalen Krogman, who had two and Austin Ho and Tyler Minx, who each chipped in one. The RoadRunners took out Mackenzie Sawyer after he had made nine saves and installed Spencer Viele in goal, where he finished with 20 saves and the win.
