Fairbanks outlasts Fresno, 5-3

The Fairbanks Ice Dogs and the Fresno Monsters were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Fairbanks made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Jacob Hetz's goal in the second period proved to be the difference maker.

Doug Rose was all over the ice for the Ice Dogs, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Rose scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 16:08 into the first period to make the score 1-1. A tripping penalty on Dan Sherer had put Fairbanks on the power play. Patrick Newell picked up the assist. Rose's next tally on the power play made the score 2-1 Fairbanks with 16:14 left in the second period. The Ice Dogs earned a power play opportunity when Karl Andersen was put in the box for checking from behind. Ben Campbell provided the assist.

The defensemen of Fairbanks were also effective in Fresno's zone, and came away with two goals. The Ice Dogs put 31 shots on net during the contest, more than the 28.0 they average per game.

Garret Clemment also scored for Fairbanks. In addition, Fairbanks received assists from Logan Wendling, Colton Wolter, and Curran Klein, who each chipped in one and Kyle Lee and Jayson Angus, who contributed two a piece.

The Monsters were often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. Fresno surpassed its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Monsters were helped by Gordon Wells, who finished with one goal. Wells scored short handed 10:40 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Fresno. Fresno was on a disadvantage when Kyle Sucher went off the ice for holding. Trevor Husch assisted on the tally. Fresno also got a goal from Ian Janco as well. Other players who recorded assists for Fresno were Drew Aspinwall, who had two and Andrew McDonald and Newton Fuller, who each chipped in one.

Steve Perry made 20 saves for Fairbanks on 23 shots. The Ice Dogs totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 2-for-8 on the power play. Macauley Haight rejected 26 shots on goal for the Monsters. Fresno registered zero goals on two power play opportunities.
