GAME RECAP

Fairbanks uses shootout to best Janesville, 2-1 (2-1 SO)

Janesville Ice Arena    Sat, Sep 22, 2012

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Fairbanks Ice Dogs defeated the Janesville Jets in a shootout 2-1 (2-1 SO).

The two teams needed 24 turns to complete the shootout. Janesville's shootout goal was scored by Austin Vieth. Fairbanks also got a shootout goal from Jakob Romo.

The Ice Dogs came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Fairbanks fell behind 1-0 after a power play goal by the Jets' Matt Salituro at 12:23 in the second period. The Ice Dogs knotted things up at 1-1 on a goal by Logan Wendling at 18:39 in the third period.

Fairbanks' Steve Perry was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 27 saves and let only one puck past him. The solid play of Perry will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 1.79.

By firing 41 shots on goal, the Ice Dogs exceeded the 24.2 shots they average per game this year.

More assists for Fairbanks came via Ben Campbell and Jacob Hetz, who contributed one a piece.

Janesville's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Fairbanks power plays. The Jets' offense was clicking better than usual and put 28 shots on goal during the game, better than the 19.8 shots per game they average.

Other players who recorded assists for Janesville were Bryan Kronberger and Kyle Halladay, who each chipped in one.

Fairbanks ended with 19 minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major. Brock Kautz made 39 saves for Janesville on 40 shots. The Jets totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play.
