Wenatchee beats Amarillo 5-3 after comeback scareSchwan SR-1 Thu, Sep 13, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Wenatchee Wild survived a determined comeback attempt by the Amarillo Bulls on the way to a 5-3 win. A goal by Derick Kuchera put Wenatchee up 5-2 in the third period, but Amarillo pulled to within two on Geoff Fortman's tally 8:48 into the third period. Jono Davis was all over the ice for the Wild, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Davis scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 9:31 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Wenatchee. Wenatchee had gained a power play chance when Omar Mullan was whistled for slashing. Joshua Hartley provided the assist. Davis' next tally on the power play made the score 4-1 Wenatchee with 19:03 left in the third period. The Wild were on a disadvantage when Nathan Flynn went off the ice for high sticking. Robert Nichols assisted on the tally. Wenatchee racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 12 minors and three majors for 59 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 32.0 minutes per game the Wild had been spending in the box. Wenatchee's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Amarillo power plays. The Wild relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Hartley, Kuchera and Davis took 11 of the team's 19 shots. Wenatchee relied heavily on its defensemen to assist its forwards, and the blueliners responded by scoring two goals on 11 shots. Wenatchee also got points from Hartley, who also registered one goal and one assist and Chris Kerr, who also had one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Wenatchee were Max McHugh, who had two and Noah Nelson and Jacob Barber, who contributed one a piece. The Bulls forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 15 minors and two majors for 50 minutes in penalty time. Amarillo surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. The Bulls average 29.0 shots on goal per game, but only sent 21 pucks on net against the Wild. The defensemen of Amarillo were also effective in Wenatchee's zone, and came away with two goals. The Bulls were helped by Joe Grabowski, who grabbed one goal. Grabowski scored 1:48 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Wenatchee. Ryan Cole provided the assist. Amarillo also got a goal from TJ Sarcona as well. More assists for Amarillo came via Clint Carlisle, who had two. Nichols recorded 18 saves for the Wild. Wenatchee registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. Collin Delia took the loss and made 11 saves before being replaced by Paul Berrafato who made three saves.
