Kalamazoo beats Fairbanks 3-2 after comeback scare

The Fairbanks Ice Dogs tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings held on for a 3-2 victory.

Kalamazoo took a 3-1 lead during the third period, only to have Fairbanks storm back on a Doug Rose goal 19:52 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Jr. K-Wings were led by Robbie Payne, who racked up one goal. Payne scored 19:16 into the third period to make the score Kalamazoo. Kyle Gattelaro provided the assist.

Kalamazoo failed to reach its usual level of shot production, putting 19 pucks on goal after averaging 26.3 shots per game this season.

Nolan Culver also scored for Kalamazoo. Other players who recorded assists for Kalamazoo were Davis Dekorte and Jacob McDowell, who each chipped in one.

The Ice Dogs were led by Colton Wolter, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Wolter scored 17:49 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Kalamazoo. Logan Wendling assisted on the tally. More assists for Fairbanks came via Garret Clemment and Jakob Romo, who contributed one a piece.

The Jr. K-Wings' Alex Okicki stopped 20 shots out of the 22 that he faced. Kalamazoo incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. Kevin Aldridge made 16 saves for Fairbanks on 18 shots. The Ice Dogs incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
