GAME RECAP

Michigan vanquishes Topeka in shootout, 2-1 (3-2 SO)

Schwan SR-2    Thu, Sep 13, 2012

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Michigan Warriors defeated the Topeka RoadRunners in a shootout 2-1 (3-2 SO).

The shootout lasted for 18 attempts between the teams. Topeka got shootout goals from Sean Gaffney and Tyler Andrew. Michigan also got shootout goals from Levi Erkkila and Jimmy Peplinski.

The Warriors were led by goalie Michael Pesendorfer, who finished with 33 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Pesendorfer will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 3.05.

Michigan's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Topeka power plays. The 28 shots that the Warriors put on net surpassed Michigan's average of 20.5 shots per game this season. The Warriors were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 26 penalty minutes.

Michigan was led by Jake Strzalkowski, who finished with one goal. Strzalkowski scored 35 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Michigan. Jake Hopfner picked up the assist.

The RoadRunners put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Warriors to score on any of their four power plays. Topeka could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game. Michigan was unable to stop the RoadRunners from sending pucks towards the net, and Topeka eventually piled up 34 shots on goal.

The RoadRunners were led by Drew Kariofiles, who scored the team's only goal. Kariofiles scored 18:19 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Michal Pastor assisted on the tally.

Mackenzie Sawyer recorded 26 saves for Topeka.
