Topeka rides Viele to victory over Kenai River, 2-1Schwan SR-1 Wed, Sep 12, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
A stellar performance between the pipes by Spencer Viele helped the Topeka RoadRunners defeat the Kenai River Brown Bears, 2-1. Topeka pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 16 penalty minutes. The RoadRunners were sparked by Sean Gaffney, who grabbed one goal. Gaffney scored 6:16 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Topeka. Kyle Sharkey picked up the assist. Topeka excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. The RoadRunners average 26.8 shots on goal per game, but only sent 20 pucks on net against Kenai River. Topeka's defensemen also contributed in the offensive zone and ended up with 12 shots between them. Topeka additionally got points from Tyler Andrew, who also tallied one goal and one assist. The Brown Bears stifled the RoadRunners' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Kenai River was held below its usual level of production. The Brown Bears average 3.2 goals per game. Topeka was unable to stop Kenai River from sending pucks towards the net, and the Brown Bears eventually piled up 33 shots on goal. Kenai River was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 30 penalty minutes. The Brown Bears were led by Zac Lazzaro, who scored the team's only goal. Lazzaro scored 18:37 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Kenai River. Vincent Stefan assisted on the tally. The RoadRunners' Viele stopped 32 shots out of the 33 that he faced. Topeka registered zero goals on eight power play opportunities. Sean Healy made 18 saves for Kenai River on 20 shots.
