Cobourg blows out Newmarket, 4-1

The Cobourg Cougars were firing on all cylinders against the Newmarket Hurricanes, and when the final buzzer sounded Cougars emerged with a 4-1 win.

Cobourg was led by goalie Nathan Perry, who finished with 42 saves while allowing one goal. Perry certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.39 entering the contest.

The Cougars' penalty kill excelled, as Cobourg gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

The Cougars were helped by Mitchell Burghardt, who had one goal and one assist. Burghardt scored on the power play 10:32 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Cobourg. Cobourg had gotten the advantage when Newmarket's Kyler Nixon was sent off for holding. Jake Emilio picked up the assist. Others who scored for Cobourg included Dylan Goddard, who had one and Taylor Gauld, who had two. In addition, Cobourg received assists from Connor Armour, who had two and Evan Jasper, Justin Danforth, Corey Helliwell, and Mark MacAulay, who each chipped in one.

The Hurricanes were held below their usual level of production. Newmarket puts an average of 3.1 pucks into the net per game. The Hurricanes' offense rang up 43 shots on the Cougars' net.

Newmarket was led by Daniel Leavens, who scored the team's only goal. Leavens scored on the power play 6:23 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Cobourg. The Hurricanes had taken the advantage when Cobourg's Gauld got sent off for slashing. Elliott Burlon provided the assist.

The Cougars incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. For Cobourg, Rylee McKinnon was ejected from the game. Lucas Peressini rejected 24 shots on goal for Newmarket. The Hurricanes incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
